Commercial Occupancies within Campbell County: LIV Memo
“House Fire Caused by Cigarette”…
…is a very possible headline when being careless with your cigarette. Potting soil, potted plants, fertilizer, dried grass, trash, and mulch burn – They’re not good ashtray material!!
“It’s a myth” or “It hasn’t happened to me or anyone I know, so it won’t”…
…may be quick thoughts, but that mindset could lead to a big problem. Grass fires can start from throwing cigarettes out of cars, and home fires can start on a deck, patio or yard and quickly spread inside.
These very real situations occur too often in Campbell County from discarded cigarettes, especially in hot, dry weather. Fully extinguish cigarettes with water or smother them in sand in a metal bucket before throwing them away.
Summer is the perfect time to grill but accidents can still happen!
Remember to:
Regularly clean your grill & empty the grease pan
Keep the lid open when lighting the grill
Follow all manufacture specifications, including to keep a clear distance to things that can burn
Never leave your grill unattended while it’s operating
Be mindful of the clothes and jewelry you’re wearing. Loose fabric can ignite and burn, and jewelry, like watches, can conduct heat to your skin.
Make sure ashes are cold prior to discarding them
